Buying a K9: What You Need to Know Before You Commit
October 14, 2026Obedience training isn’t just about having a dog that behaves nicely around people. Some of the most useful commands are the ones that could keep a dog out of trouble. A dog that stops when told, comes back when called or leaves something alone gives its owner a chance to prevent an accident rather than trying to deal with one afterwards.
A Recall Could Save Your Dog
A reliable recall is particularly important because dogs don’t understand roads, traffic or other dangers in the way people do. If a gate is accidentally left open or a dog slips its lead, being able to call it back could prevent it from running into a road or getting lost. Recall also needs to work when the dog is distracted, which is why practising only in the garden isn’t enough.
“Leave It” Has More Uses Than You Might Think
Dogs investigate the world with their mouths, and that can get them into trouble. Food dropped in the street, discarded rubbish, bait, unfamiliar objects and even another animal’s faeces can all be tempting. Teaching a dog to leave something alone gives an owner another option besides physically pulling it away from whatever it has found.
Stopping Can Be Just as Important as Coming
A dog that knows how to stop and wait can be safer around doors, gates, driveways and roads. It can also prevent a dog from rushing into a situation before its owner has had a chance to see what’s ahead. Teaching a dog to wait before moving through an open gate or getting out of a vehicle can become a useful habit rather than something the owner has to remember to enforce every time.
It Helps When a Dog Is Frightened or Injured
Dogs don’t always behave normally when they’re frightened or hurt. Even a friendly dog may resist being touched or handled when it’s in pain. Training a dog to accept handling of its paws, ears, mouth and body can make routine care easier and may also help if it ever needs treatment after an accident. This is especially useful because an injured dog may not understand that someone is trying to help.
Safety Isn’t Only About Emergencies
Obedience also affects everyday risks. A dog that pulls constantly can slip a collar or harness, while one that charges through doors can run into a vehicle or another dog. Learning to walk under control, wait when asked and respond to its handler reduces opportunities for these situations to happen in the first place.
Obedience training gives owners more than control over their dogs. It gives them ways to intervene when a dog is heading towards something it doesn’t understand is dangerous. For many owners, that’s one of the most important reasons to train.
